Development of the avocado production chain in the Sierra Peru

The inter-Andean valleys in central Peru have great agricultural potential, yet much remains to be done to support their development. Currently, these regions lack technical advisory programmes and commercial partnerships that offer fair conditions, despite the fact that agriculture and livestock are the primary economic activities upon which all households rely.

The Peruvian Sierra accounts for 51% of the country’s land area, but it remains largely underdeveloped. This is partly due to a lack of government promotion, as well as the challenges posed by distance, accessibility.

For families in the Sierra, avocado cultivation represents a vital opportunity, offering three key advantages: favourable climatic conditions for organic farming, high organoleptic quality (good size, brightness, and colour), and a commercial window from October to February. It is therefore strategic to ensure that these producers can cultivate high-quality fruit and participate in the market under improved conditions.

We are working with the Vista Alegre farming community in the Pariahuanca district of Huancayo, Junín, situated at 2,780 metres above sea level. Here, we are training 22 Hass avocado producers who currently manage approximately 38 hectares of avocado orchards. Throughout the year, two agronomists provide guidance on productive management and quality certifications. The producers have warmly welcomed our team, and their fruit is on track to meet organic standards for the upcoming 2025 campaign.

At BeFair Bio, we believe that the choices we make today shape the world of tomorrow.
