Assisting growers in improving soil quality using organic and natural methods

Agriculture in Peru has distinctive characteristics due to its ecological and socioeconomic diversity, making it unique within Latin America. The country features numerous microclimates, from the irrigated coast, where technologically advanced agriculture coexists with small-scale farming, to the Andes mountain range, which spans the nation and contains numerous inter-Andean valleys and plateaus extending over 5,000 metres above sea level. Additionally, the Peruvian jungle is characterized by the extensive and productive diversity typical of the Amazon.

Historical social and economic processes have contributed to a complex system of land tenure. Approximately 70% of the land is held by small producers, spanning various ecological zones. This complexity results in national agricultural production focusing on non-traditional crops and specializing in fresh fruits, various types of coffee, cocoa, and Andean grains, which find commercial niches and qualify for special certifications such as Organic or Biotrade.

BeFair Bio plays a crucial role in ensuring that the work of producers successfully reaches the final consumer. Through a commercial alliance, it advises producers on organic production management, certifies the areas, monitors organic integrity, harvests and markets the produce at fair prices, while also undertaking social responsibility initiatives.

Educating entrepreneurial producers in Peru

This programme involves investing human and financial resources in advising producers throughout the year. It consists of advising all our producers and even third parties on agronomic and organic management.

Our team includes five agricultural engineers with several years of experience who already have established relationships of friendship and trust with the producers. Occasionally, we also rely on specialists from SENASA or other knowledgeable partners.

These sessions, using the field school methodology, are quite unique as they allow for the exchange of experiences. Producers must always be aware of market demands, including quality, commercial windows, fruit sizes, and certifications, as we compete with fruits from other origins.

In 2023, we have carried out:

  • 110 technical assistance visits to mango and avocado producers. These visits occur monthly and are conducted by our team and, in some cases, by external professionals. Each technical visit involves inspecting the entire field, monitoring pests, and assessing the nutritional status of the crop. The responsible engineer also provides recommendations.
  • 14 field workshops with groups of producers. These workshops were held with mango producers in Piura to diagnose flowering, with avocado producers, addressing the issue of heavy metals, and with producers and plant workers in Satipo, focusing on quality and post-harvest practices.

At BeFair Bio, we believe that the choices we make today shape the world of tomorrow.
